Agile minded QUT Students – Get to know the OTM Interns

Recently, we welcomed three Queensland University of Technology (QUT) students, Elzette, Jake and Nick to our Intern Program. OTM has immersed them into a positive, real-world learning experience and provided them with insight into how our business and industry operates while also allowing them to develop foundation skills in the fields of marketing, social media, research and market analysis.

Our interns have enquiring and agile minds and have shown initiative when faced with new tasks. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with students with such confidence, enthusiasm and a thirst to learn.

The team has been engaged in separate research, creative and campaign initiatives. Two research papers based on economic growth drivers and digital marketing will be published over the coming months.


Elzette Genis

Degree: Bachelor of Business (Marketing) / Bachelor of Creative Industries (Media Communication)

Graduation due date: June 2017

What is your dream job? To work for L’Oréal Australia within their Melbourne headquarters. Their wide range of brands and creative working space is something that I have always dreamed of being a part of. Their ethical working practices and strong female esthetic is something that has always drawn me to them and I will continue to strive to be a part of their team.

What’s the next step in your career path going to be? I hope to find a first-year position within the Marketing and/or Media communications industry in Sydney or Melbourne.

What have been your key takeaways from your OTM Internship? The experience has enabled me to be able to transfer the knowledge of my degree into a real-world working environment, which I feel has made me a more employable practitioner. Learning how to properly plan and manage a digital project within a team environment has been a valuable experience. Learning how to use a wide range of programs and industry relevant websites that I did not have the opportunity to use within my degree.

What industry trends or growth areas really interest you? Working within the retail sector in my part time job, I’ve always been very interested in this space. Whether it be online or in store I find it interesting how this space has evolved over the years and how it will continue to change and influence culture.

What have you enjoyed most about your degree? I’ve been lucky that I have enjoyed my degree from the very start. I love learning about the innovations within the marketing industry and the way we can influence how a consumer perceives value. International Marketing and Digital Portfolio were some of my favourite subjects throughout my degree. The way that cultures work and respond to messages in a different way has always been something that has fascinated me from a young age.

Jake Healy 

Degree: Bachelor of Business (Marketing)

Graduation due date: End of 2017

What is your dream job? Creative director or marketing exec. for a favourite brand of mine.

What is the next step in your career path going to be? Attain a full-time position in the marketing field.

What have been your key takeaways from your OTM Internship? Insights into the current state of management – as clients face disruption, they also face opportunity.

What industry trends or growth areas really interest you? Given digitalisation has radically changed the behaviour and expectations of the consumer, I enjoy seeing brands and companies successfully resonate with their target audience through innovative strategies and tactics.

What have you enjoyed most about your degree? The University lifestyle.

Nicholas Travasino

Degree: Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Business (Accounting)

Graduation due date: June 2017

What is your dream job? Professional footballer, however, I accepted a long time ago that I was dreaming.

What’s the next step in your career path going to be? I’ll be moving down to Melbourne after university, so there will be plenty of exciting opportunities to come!

What have been your key takeaways from your OTM Internship? I have developed an appreciation for the role of collaboration in the research process. During the internship, I was given the opportunity to meet with several industry experts which enhanced my knowledge and improved the overall credibility of my research.

Research can sometimes be quite tiresome and time-consuming, but if you persevere with it, the results will be worthwhile and a lot can be learned.

What industry trends or growth areas really interest you? I was particularly interested in both the renewable energy and FinTech industries, which is why I chose to focus my research and writing on these two areas. I believe a lot of exciting things are happening in both spaces as technology improves and new products and services emerge.

What have you enjoyed most about your degree? Both degrees have helped me develop a broad range of skills, which has allowed me to obtain diverse experience in several areas. Research, writing and communication have been big facets of both degrees and I believe the lessons I have learned at university will be of great assistance once I enter the workforce.

Working with OTM I am able to support clients to engage with both internal and external stakeholders through a variety of different communication strategies. I spend my days doing digital marketing, creating content, implementing strategies, managing campaigns, delivering events, monitoring analytics and creating client reports, directing creative, mentoring our new team members...and so much more.
