World Science Festival:
Brisbane is stepping up to bring science to the masses
Next week is the inundation of all things science to South East Queensland with the launch of the World Science Festival Brisbane which brings more than 100 science celebrities from nine countries here for five days from March 9. The festival aims to make science more accessible (and child friendly) by taking it out of the laboratory and into public spaces with debates, interactive experiments and musical and theatrical performances.
The World Science Festival began in New York in 2008 and is an annual week-long celebration and exploration of science. For the first time the event will be hosted outside New York at our very own Queensland Museum.
World Science Festival – “Our mission is to cultivate a general public informed by science, inspired by its wonder, convinced of its value, and prepared to engage with its implications for the future.”
Promoting technology as a career path of choice.
Staying with the science theme, as part of International Women’s Day there are a couple of activities aimed at bringing women and girls into the tech industry:
The Tech Girls Movement, is holding an event called Superhero Daughter Day during Queensland Woman’s Week to celebrate International Women’s Day and promote technology as a career path of choice for young females.
Digital Careers is holding a panel discussion with Female Trailblazers working in ICT fields including multimedia design, communications, computer science and software engineering.
So go on, get out there and get with the science.
